Riding Shotgun with Misty DeMeans

Narrator: At the height of her MMA career, Misty DeMeans amassed an undefeated record of 5-0 and was on the cusp of a Union GP lightweight championship and had signed an enormous $900, 000 per fight deal over four fights which had been the largest contract for a non title holder in the companies history. After a life of hardship, Misty had finally achieved the great American dream she had always felt had been reserved for only those who did not look like her.

Misty DeMeans

”When I stepped into the game less than a year before, I told myself I was going to make my first million by the end of the year. Shit changed up real quick. I was in line to make nearly that for a single fight and the year was barely halfway done yet. In hindsight, I guess it was all just too good to be true. You know, real life shit.”

Narrator: Less than 48 hours after Misty DeMeans inked her historic four fight deal, it all came crashing down on her. News quickly broke implicating the rising MMA star in a steroid scandal that swept the MMA world. To this day, Misty has maintained her innocence.

Misty DeMeans

”It was all bullshit man, I’ve always been a clean fighter and never took any short cuts. The steroid scandal was driven by a social media lynch mob pushed along by every fighter who knew they couldn’t beat me in the cage. Due to the public pressure, the President had no fucking back bone and released me from my contract to save the public perception of his brand even though he knew I had not part in any wrong doing. And just like that, it was over… or so it seemed at the time.”

Narrator: As a result of her scandal, Misty was bought out of her contract and sent on her way. Several other MMA promotions with a business kinship with Union GP also took their lead and are believed to have black listed the former lightweight contender from the fight business. Despite the controversy surrounding her, her team HILITE FC stood by her during the hardest of times.

James Raven

”We knew the entire thing was bullshit as soon as the story broke. The team got together pretty quickly and decided that if Misty wasn’t going to fight due to the witch hunt then every active HILITE FC member also fighting under the Union GP banner were going to also ask for their releases. They made their decision and we made ours, zero regrets.”

Misty DeMeans

”Aw shit man, that was one of the realest moments of my life. I talked to Kato, Brock, Nate… all those guys and told them that they didn’t need to put their careers on the line like that but they weren’t hearing that shit. They usually listen to me but on this one they weren’t having any of it. Looking back at it, I don’t even think they did it because of me but because of the principle. They knew I was innocent. I think they would have done the same thing for any other fighter under our banner who was getting rail roaded like that and I swear I’ll remember that shit til’ the day I’m in the dirt.”

Narrator: After the high profiled walkout and controversy surrounding Misty DeMeans and her team at HILITE FC she made a hard decision to take a leave of absence and with the support of her teammates she had travelled to abroad to Puckett, Thailand to expand her craft.

Misty DeMeans

”I went away to Thailand for a few months to get away from all the bullshit, all the noise. I had to get my mind right. I stayed away from social media, I cut off a majority of my friends and family and focused on evolving as a MMA fighter and person. While I was there, I improved my Muay Thai quite a bit and became more than serviceable with my elbows and knees.”

Narrative: For Misty DeMeans, this wasn’t an easy decision. She was the lead striking coach at HILITE FC and notably had coached untrained women empowering them to defend themselves.

[We see the footage in the HILITE FC gym with Misty corralling a group of young to middle aged females together. Once they’ve gathered around her, she had made a big announcement]

Misty DeMeans

”Hey ya’ll. I brought you all here today to let ya’ll know that this going to be our last class for awhile. It was a hard decision for me to make to step away from all this at this time but I need to do what’s best for my career and our team.”

Nia Wilks

”Misty was such a great coach to us. It’s hard to imagine me here without her. She has taught us all so much, she has given us so much confidence and has helped me become a much stronger person, a stronger woman. Although it’s hard, I can’t give up. Not now. We have all worked too hard to quit on this now.”

Vanessa Parks

”Psh. I can’t believe Misty is leaving us! Who the heck is going to train us all now or keep that creep Clive Hicks away from the women’s change rooms? Ugh. I am sorry but I completely pulling my HILITE FC part-time platinum blonde membership too!”

Tekeyah Jackson

”Man, ya’lls trippin off this shit too hard. Ya’ll know she’s going to be back in no time cussin’ our asses off and beating us up. Look, we support you Misty. Do you. The real ones is still going be here for you when you get back.”

Narrator: As Misty DeMeans headed to Thailand rumblings of a new MMA start up promotion called Global Combat Championships started to make it’s rounds. Most notably her training partners and mentors, Takeshi Kato was one of the first of many international stars to sign with the GCC.

Misty DeMeans

”Yeah, I heard Takeshi Kato signed onto that shit early and I was all for it. As far as the promotion itself, I didn’t have much faith in it. To keep it one hunna, I thought they would have a few shows before shutting their shit down and skip out on paying all the fighters.”

Narrator: Today, Global Combat Championship has quickly become one of the premier MMA promotions around the world. The quick rise in popularity eventually gave her hope.

Misty DeMeans

”It was clear by the way they treated the HILITE guys that they were going to let me fight. Problem is, I wasn’t going to just come in and fight for whatever it was they were planning to pay me… cheap ass motherfuckers.”

Narrator: Misty DeMeans would meet with President Khan on several different occasion to work out a multi fight agreement.

Misty DeMeans

”They were paying Kato and Quarry over 100k per fight. We ain’t mad at that but the Khan’s were low balling me, saying they couldn’t pay me as much as them because they were former Union GP champions. Nah, fuck that noise. Those are my boys and they deserve that shit and much more but we are NOT one in the same. The amount of attention, hype and controversy I bring just by being me is something that needed to be factored into the motherfucking equation. Simple.”  Narrator: As a result, negotiations had stalled out with neither side willing to budge. Misty DeMeans knew that if she was going to fight again it was going to have to be in Global and she would have to get creative.

Misty DeMeans

”I went after his grand daughter, Rupika. I knew that spoiled rotten bitch was going to take the bait if I could pull the right triggers. Shit, it worked better than expected because other fighters trying to suck up to the Khan’s egged her on, blew her head up and made her actually believe that she could beat me. When it was all said and done, I think she wanted the fight more than I did.”

Mr. Khan

”I had reservations of signing Misty DeMeans. She is a polarizing personality and that’s without taking her scandals into considerations. My granddaughter Rupika definitely had a lot to do with why I ultimately decided to pay Misty DeMeans to fight for us and in hindsight, I am glad I made the decision. Love or hate her, she is one heck of a fighter and she is one of our biggest draws among the American fans.”

Narrator: The fight deal was inked and the two women had been scheduled to meet on December 21st in Germany in the GFN 4 main event. For the first time in her career, she was scheduled to compete in a five round fight.

Misty DeMeans

”I ain’t gonna lie, I really didn’t think I’d need five to finish it. Up until that fight with Rupika, I had knocked everyone out cold before it went to the judges. I know I clown on Rupika and shit but to keep shit one hunna with you, she was the toughest fight of my career.”

[We cut to a scene from the fight. Misty DeMeans has Rupika Khan backed up against the cage and is swarming her with left, right combinations. Rupika sways side to side trying to avoid the blows and one right hand sneaks through her guard rocking her and turning her legs into jello but the referee interjects as the bell to end the round sounds with Rupika Khan remaining upright against the cage wall.]

Misty DeMeans

”I rocked the shit out of her at the end of the second round and when the referee stepped in between us, I thought that shit was over only to come to find out the round actually ended.”

[We cut to several instances where Rupika Khan has Misty DeMeans backed up against the cage and successfully executing take downs putting her onto her back forcefully.]

Misty DeMeans

”Deadass she put my flat on my back. I had never been taken down before. When I signed with GCC that was one of the things my team had me working on knowing that the talent in GCC was much more superior in that area… these chicks can straight up wrestle in this joint. So, yeah. I ain’t gonna lie I was kinda of shocked when she took me down and really had to think back to what I was learning in my training camp in preparation for the fight.”

Narrator: At the end of the fourth round, the consensus was that both fighters were 2-2 on the judges scorecards heading into the fifth round.

Corner: Brock Quarry: ”Misty! Listen to me! Misty! It’s 2-2, do NOT let this shit go to the judges you hear me!? They’re going to fuck you, do you understand me? Finish her! Back her up, get her back to the cage and work her in the clinch. Watch the under hooks, strong positioning, she’s helpless up against the cage. End this shit. Watch her fucking take downs. NO JUDGES, MISTY!”

Misty DeMeans

”Hey, if it ain’t tough then it ain’t love. I would have said the same shit if I was in my corner. Sittin’ on the stool looking across from Rupika and her being still in the fight was a fucking wake up call. Yet in the moment, I ain’t have any fear. I knew she couldn’t hurt me. I knew she wasn’t going to finish me and that she was just fighting to survive and I knew I wasn’t about to go out on some points bullshit technicality.”

Narrator: In the fifth round with time ticking down, it looked as if Misty DeMeans had finally met her match. To this day, there is much debate on how exactly the fight would have been called if it had went to the judges.

[Misty DeMeans has Rupika Khan pushed up against the cage, she drives a hard elbow into her face that reopens a cut she had sustained earlier in the fight. Blood leaks onto the canvas as Rupika Khan struggles to escape, she manages to circle out as Misty DeMeans takes a glance up at the clock and see’s there’s less than 20 seconds left in the fight. However before she can swarm Rupika, the referee steps in between the two women and urgently calls for the doctor to intervene.]

Misty DeMeans

”Man, I was surprised as hell the referee called a timeout right then and there… it wasn’t until I seen the replay that I understood why. That bitch had a extra clit on her face. I knew as soon as the doc took a look at it that he was calling the fight. The fans were pissed as hell and I hear them but he needed to protect grand daddies little girl or his job was on the line. He made the right call in the end of the night.”

Announcer: And your winner via Doctors stoppage due to cuts at 4:43 seconds of round five…. MISTY ”MISDEMEANOR” DEMEANS!!!!

[Crowd booing]

Misty DeMeans

”Oh man, those Germans were pissed off. I had to be escorted out by police that night, them crazy German niggas really wanted to kill my ass. No cap. Shit was kinda hilarious though, not gonna lie.”

Narrator: Once again, Misty DeMeans had found herself in amidst of yet another controversy but it would pale in comparison with the exploits to come.

Misty DeMeans

”After the Rupika Khan fight, I spoke to Khan off and on about what was next. A few names were floating around like Anaquin Adams and some twilight bitch named Kali on twitter as potential opponents, you know… nothing that really seemed worthwhile to me on paper.”

Narrator: While Misty DeMeans had no shortages in terms of potential suitors she was in no hurry to sign on for her next fight. In the meantime the featherweight division moved on without a hitch.

Mr. Khan

”Nika Kosov and Krystal Knight was a big fight we had planned for the fans but at a moments notice, Nika Kosov had pulled out due to an injury and we needed to find a replacement as soon as possible. Misty DeMeans was the only fighter to step up and vocally declare she was willing to step up and fight Krystal Knight on short notice so she was the obvious replacement.”

Misty DeMeans

”Don’t hate the player, hate the game. Bitches just sit on their asses expecting the world to unfold right in their lap and shit. Wake up. Ain’t no such thing as good luck where I am from, where I grew up… you had to go out and make your own luck. So, that’s exactly what I did. So all these people saying I was ducking ”insert your fav fighter here” had their hands out looking stupid as fuck when I stepped off the plane and into the main event scene. Real talk if folks spent more time worrying about the shit they got going on instead of what I am doing their careers would be in a slightly better place even if that’s being right below mine.”

Narrator: With a marquee match up now announced between Krystal Knight and Misty DeMeans to determine the number one contender for the GCC featherweight championship, President Khan sought to capitalize on the press.

[Footage of a press conference plays with Mr. Khan announcing that the two fighters will be going on a week long media tour before the fight.]

Misty DeMeans

”That was a bad fucking idea.”

[Off camera, Misty’s teammates can be heard laughing hysterically.]

James Raven

”I’ve never seen such a one sided media tour in my entire life. Misty was right at home out there and Krystal Knight was completely out of her element, you almost feel sorry for her.”

Misty DeMean

”Yeah but then not really.”

[James laughs]

James Raven

”While all this is going on, that’s when Misty’s sister hits her up fresh out of jail.”

Misty DeMeans

”Shit, I know it wasn’t the smartest thing to do — picking her up along the way but we haven’t kicked in years and it was the perfect opportunity to catch up with her. So, I invited her along.”

James Raven

”Huge mistake.”

Misty DeMeans

”Seemed entirely reasonable at the time bro.”

[A news paper report flashes on screen indicating the tour bus they had been on had crashed. As a result both Krystal Knight and Misty DeMeans sustained injuries that put the fight in jeopardy.]

Vannah White [Interviewer]

”Reports have come out since then that there was drinking and the presence of drugs on board that tour bus that night.”

Misty DeMeans

”Really? Interesting. I don’t know cause it definitely wasn’t mine. There were tons of people on that tour bus many of them were from the splat network themselves and any one of those guys including Krystal Knight could have been responsible for that but I can only speak for myself.”

Vannah White [Interviewer]

”And your sister, Feloni?”

Misty DeMeans

”… and only SHE can only speak for herself.”

Narrator: We had reached out to Feloni DeMeans for comment and never got one.

Vannah White [Interviewer]

”They cancelled the fight.”

Misty DeMeans

”Yup, even thought I told them motherfuckers I was perfectly fine to compete. The doctor said I had a concussion but those heal up with a cup of orange drank and a good nights reset, so I really don’t see what the big fucking deal is. Anyways, Krystal Knight decided to go giddy up on her high horse as she ALWAYS does and claimed that she didn’t want to beat me in that condition. Like bitch please, you can’t beat me in or under ANY condition.”

Narrator: With the fight being cancelled, President Khan announced that the fight would be rescheduled a month later at GCC 6 on March 6th as the main event of an historic all female main MMA card. Misty would go on to win the fight by TKO via Doctors stoppage in the first round.

Misty DeMeans

”I haven’t had an easier fight since Union GP to be quite honest. Though to her credit, Krystal actually landed a punch. I really think I put a lot of people on notice after I beat Knight in the manner in which I did now people know I am the real fucking deal no matter what banner I fight under.”

Narrator: And now as Misty prepares to win her first major MMA title she looks to do so under extraordinary circumstances.

[A closed to the public sign is placed on the front door of the HILITE FC gym, a gym once known for welcoming anyone who came through their doors now had take precautions they had never planned for.]

Misty DeMeans

”This Coronavirus is some shit for real. It’s completely changed the way we do things around camp now. I can’t train with who I want to, when I want to or even how I want too and it’s made things tough on us all but we gonna rise above it, that’s for damn sure.”

[Footage rolls of Misty DeMeans laying back first on the octagon cage floor alongside her teammate and best friend, Brock Quarry. They are watching footage of Gaia Galanos vs. Juanita Sanchez on Misty’s cellphone.]

Brock Quarry

”You ready for this one kiddo?”

Misty DeMeans

”Yessir. You know damn well that I’ve been dreaming of this fucking moment since forever.”

Brock Quarry

”You’re only 21 years old, Misty.”

Misty DeMeans

”You know what I mean, Brock! It seems like whenever I come close to getting what I’ve always wanted something has to get in the way and fuck it up. Last time it was the bullshit steroid scandal, this time a world wide pandemic is spreading around the world and shutting down just about everything around us.”

[Brock Quarry sits up and extends a hand to his friend.]

Brock Quarry

”Everything except us. Let’s get up and go at this again.”

[We see b-roll footage of Misty DeMeans standing in front of a glass case display of all the former champions that had walked through HILITE FC’s gym.]

Misty DeMeans

”I ain’t gonna cry or some shit but man, I really owe the world to HILITE FC who’s had my back since day one. Kato, Brock, Nate, James, those guys are my friends in the world and have trusted me to put the brand on my shoulders and I know they got my back no matter what. I love them niggas til’ the death.”’

[A staff member comes along-side Misty to open up the case and adjust the name plate under Erik Malkasian signalling the end to his championship reign at heavyweight.]

November 30th, 2019 – March 20th, 2020.

[Before the staff member skirts off, Misty gives him a dirty look]

Misty DeMeans

”I was robbed of my opportunity of being a champion once and I am not going to let that happen again. I worked too fuckin’ hard and too damn long to fall short now. On April 3, me and Gaia are stepping into the cage and only one of us is stepping the fuck out the same in which we walked in. No fans in attendance, fuck them… let god be my witness, I will FUCK this bitch up or die trying in that cage.”

[While Misty DeMeans stands in front of the championship glass case she see’s the reflection of her mentor Takeshi Kato staring back at her.]

Takeshi Kato

”You’ve already won in my eyes, Misty. Thank you for everything.”
